what is the acceptable quality of a video or speech over a communication channel of given bandwidth

It depends on the compression and what you're trying to do. 56K uncompressed represents a toll-grade voice call but you can achieve nearly toll-grade down to nearly 8Kbps with compression. Older algorithms would present 384K video as good and 768K as great (in my opinion). Today's algorithms on the Tandberg and Polycom equipment can make 192K look good and 384K great (in my opinion). -CL
