Performance monitors for Backup

We have some backups running that randomly take way longer to run on some nights. We want to see if it is tapes, drives, drivers, firmware or hardware. I see there are a whack of performance counters for BE and I am wondering if anyone could recommend what to monitor to determine what is causing the problems. It's BE 8.6 by the way.
