Hi,

I have an application that runs almost everything at the company i work at (accounts, sales, factory process etc). I have a specific issue that its performance degrades over time without any visible changes in taskmgr or perfmon.

A month or so ago i swapped the application from our application server (server 2003) onto a blank XP box (with no other software running. Immediatley the application was performing excellently again - problem solved... until over the last two months the applications performance degraded again.

Im not getting much help from the application vendors so i wanted to see if anyone had experienced am similar issue from a windows side of things?...

Thanks!

Does it clear up after a reboot? Could be over time it uses more and more memory and doesn't release it. Also check you page file maybe that needs to be bigger or moved.

Hi,

No it doesnt clear up after a reboot. Also page file is hardly used and have tried moving it to non windows HD.

...

Does it have a backend database, could be something weird going on with indexes etc?

It has an ODBC link to a SQL server (which acts as a mirror DB) - but this remained the same accross the two servers i have run it on - could there be something weird like a massive SQL log or something? (trying to think what will have been cleared when transferred onto new server and then build up again over time..).

It would help to know more about the underlying database used in the application. You say SQL is used as a "mirror"? Indexes would be one thing to look at. Disk fragmentation might be another. If it is a LARGE database (what is the size) and it will become fragmented accross the disk over time. Run a defrag.

Cant really say a lot about the underlying DB - the software is made by a company called Hansaworld and the backend is their own.

Also - I have run several defrags will no effect on the app. I have also run the applications re-index routines several times again with no benefit.

Thanks for your suggestions guys - cant help but think someone somewhere is testing me!

There could be a temporary cache some where in the installation directory, maybe. If so, you may have to stop the app and/or the services running with it, clear the cache and start the app/services back up.

Also do a netstat from the cmd prompt. This will show all network connection to the box. Maybe it is not releasing the connections. If there are too many open connection to this machine it will cause a preformance degrade as well.
