Can anyone remember what the skinny is with Per Server verses Per Seat NT and Win2K licensing? My friend
has a server that is saying:

"License usage for a product licensed in per server mode is at the maximum number of licenses purchased. New license requests may not be granted."

The NT 4 PDC is reporting that a Win2K member server is at the maximum number of "per server" licenses. I think he can "purchase" per seat licenses in License manager on the NT 4 PDC to solve connectivity, but don't really know
if that will stop these License Warnings. For that matter, I can't remember if you can mix per seat and per server modes.

Got any ideas?
Aint this fun?!? ;-)

Per server licensing means that you can have X amount of concurrent connections to the server... a connection can be anything from a mapped network drive to a print request. These connections are tracked by the server itself according to the number of licenses you have.

Per Seat licensing means that each Workstation has a license to connect to an NT server, and can connect to that server an unlinited amount of times, the concurrent connections are not tracked, however, 1 license per workstation per server is required... IE if a workstation has one license it can connect to one server, if it has 2, then 2 servers, and so on. These licenses are tracked on the server, not the workstation.... you just must have the proper licenses installed on each server. an example is, if you have 50 PC's that connect to one server, you need 50 per seat on that server... if only 25 of those 50 connect to another server, you only need 25 per seat on that server.

I hope that this helps,

Good Luck,

Thanks SteelDragon. You just re-affirmed what I thought I knew.

Do you or anyone know if you can change licensing modes and if so, how? Aint this fun?!? ;-)

You can change licensing modes ONCE during your ownership of the license and in only one direction... in other words you can only "upgrade" your license. The upgrade is from Per Server to Per Seat, and it is done in license manager, under the administrative tools.

Hope that Helps,
