Just a quick question. I'm looking at a laptop with a Intel Pentium M 750 processor in it. I know this is a 1.86GHz processor with 2mb L2 cache on a 533MHz FSB. But the question is, what is a comparable desktop processor to this one?

That is a tricky question! In my experience, a M1.86 will do most tasks as quickly as P4/2.8 - but that's far from the end of the story.

A desktop with a P4/2.8, dual channel memory and SATA2 drive will beat the crap out of a M750 when it comes to video creation.

But say you want minimal heat for something like a Media Centre PC, then you'll find it very hard to distinguish a M1.4 from a P4/2.8.

Yes, it depends on the applications run. Anything that draws heavily on the memory bandwidth and system bus will benefit a P4 desktop CPU over any laptop.

But it's not uncommon to see a Pentium M laptop perform similarly to a P4 desktop CPU that runs as much as 1GHz faster.

The Pentium M's were re-designed from the ground up (supposively), and can't be compared to P4's in terms of GHz. It's much like the Athlon vs. P4 speed difference.
