Has anyone any experience of using a pentium 4 system as a server?

Ok, the server can't be as fast as its internet connection, but if you have some stonking databases with 100's of contiuos users won't such a beast be useful?

Most of the web hosting sites seem to offer a Linux system running on a Celeron 600Mhz. Why don't they offer Pentium 4 systems?

Most Linux users are price-sensitive (I know I am!). A P-4 system won't be cheap. But I bet if you asked for one, they'd quote you a price.

It's been my experience that most systems today are I/O bound. The CPU (if it's got any horsepower at all) sits idle nearly all the time. So I'd put my money into hardware RAID, rather than buying a faster processor.
