Hello all,
I'm getting ready to buy a Wacom tablet for Photoshop and I thought I could also use it for MS Office. I just bought Office Pro 2007 and at school I remember there being a Pens tab.

Apparently, the default settings do not show the pens tab. At least not on mine. Does anyone know how to activate this? I am a bit surprised though, because normally you can use a mouse to doodle on the document too. There's probably something simple that I'm missing, but I'm stumped.

Also, how do you access help in Office?

Thanks,
Nathan

Pens tab? Is that something to do with Windows Tablet settings?

Help in OFFICE Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Access, etc.) or help in WINDOWS Operating System?

Skip,

I don't know much about this but you have to be running a tablet version of windows (which I presume you are) and Word and Excel need to recognise that you have an inking device (a pen!). Given those conditions I believe the Ink Tools should be automatically shown.

Does inking work (and you're just missing the tab), or does it not work at all? Does it work in other applications?

Enjoy,
Tony

We want to help you; help us to do it by reading this: Before you ask a question.

I'm working (slowly) on my own website

The Windows Tablet tools (at least in Windows XP) is a service that runs alongside other services. So it is possible to have disabled that startup/service item.

But also, the way that Wacom works, it may interface with the Tablet PC settings differently than a tablet LCD monitor - not 100% sure, but just seems that way.

And you may have to change some device properties, perhaps on the Wacom settings on your system to get it to work with non-drawing applications the way you want.

And one other possibility - at least in one other forum where this was discussed, it appears that it works better with Office 2003 than 2007 for some reason... One user couldnt' get it to work at all with Word 2007, but no proble working with Word 2003. Same thread, another person stated it worked fine with OneNote 2007, just not Word 2007.

Perhaps you can try using OneNote, and saving from there to a Word file? I've not really had experience in OneNote other than opening the app and maybe looking it over once, so I can't say that'll work for sure.

Well, my last statmeents are assuming you want to use the pen with Word. With others, I'm not sure.

And here's a link from the same Google search that gave the forum discussion where a person reviews it, and states it works well with Office 2007:
But it doesn't really say HOW they got it working.

Give this Google search a try - seems like it could give lots of good results from what I've seen at a glance.

I don't know if there is anything special needed, but maybe.

I have been using a Wacom pen for over ten years, and have had no problems with any software. I do not think I could function with a "normal" mouse.

Thanks guys for your ideas and suggestions. I'm just going to wait and see what happens when I install my tablet. I'm buying it for Photoshop anyways so no loss if it doesn't work for Office.

Thanks,
Nathan

One of the best investments you will ever make for Photoshop. As stated, I have been using a Wacom (with Photoshop) for 10 years. I seriously do not think I could function in Photoshop without it.
