Pen Tool and Pattern Tool to live in Harmony

I'm trying to get the Pen Tool to work with Pattern Brushes the same way as they work with the Pencil tool, I've put an example here -->

Can anyone tell me how to either configure the pattern brush or the pen tool so that when they are used together, there isn't this stop and start behaviour that I'm seeing, it's really frustrating. I'm importing map data and them making it pretty in illustrator, but I have to redraw every train track and every highway so that this behaviour doesn't occur and it's way too much work for such a good program. If there isn't a way, then I'll have to convert to..... to.... FREEHAND!!!! GOD NO THE INSANITY!
