peer to peer network, network path not found

Hi,
I'm trying to establish a peer to peer network with 2 win2K pro machines connected via a cross over cable.

I have TCP/IP and netbeui installed on both machines. I've enabled netbeui over tcpip. i've tried static ip addresses (192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2) and dynamic allocation. the workgroup name is the same, and both computers can see each other on when i browse my network places.

When i try to browse for shared folders on the other computer through my network places, i get a message saying \\computername network path not found. I've shared resources on both computers and i have created user accounts on both machines.

i've tried pinging the other machine(both name and ip address) and i get a message saying host...not found.

I am absolutely stuck in terms of what to do next. Any advice would be great, even if its informing me about how to do what i've already done. I may have missed something.

How is the Speed and Duplex set on your NICs? - if each is set to auto, they're expecting a hub or router to get a reply from. Set both to the same setting - 100/Full or 10/Half - that might be then entire problem.
For IP, since there is no DNS, you may need to specify the computer names and IP addresses in the HOSTS file on each machine (or LMHOST or whatever it is on Win2K)
Have you used this crossover cable before? Is it a two-pair or a 4-pair cable? If two-pair, get a 4 pair. Or splurge for a little hub and skip the crossover cable.
If still having problems, try using IPX! Good luck!

Do you have a firewall running? If so shut it down. If you can then communicate then you have to set your firewall up to allow the communications.

Also be sure that under sharing you have the permissions set (when you right click your drive letter and select sharing the permissions button is there)to include the computer and user ID you wish to share resources with. You can select show all users and select the User ID. If you are able to see the other computers on the network, this may be the culprit.

Start with the basics. Check the cable. Is it new or is it store bought? Is it all the way plugged in? Can you ping you local IP (If your PC IP is 192.168.0.1, then ping 192.168.0.1 ans see if you get a reply) If you get a reply the disconnect all shares and then reshare them. If you do not get a reply. Then uninstall TCP/IP then reinstall it. Let me know if you have tried these or if anything works. James Collins

How about trying super simple. Check hardware issues mentioned above and then use Netbeui only and enable Guest account after removing other defined users on each machine. If it works, add in TCP/IP. progress to defined users.

In this case a basic setup will work, set your ip to be determined automatically and then disable your dns if it's defined. Set share and user accounts normally. If I were to guess I would say that you defined a DNS, if you did this would cause your host not found message, seeing as there would be no DNS for the request to go through.
