I have a device that is broadcasting its sid on my network, it is setup as ad-hoc peer to peer. I want to find this device and stop it from broadcasting.

I used netstumbler to get the MAC address, however it doesnt match any of the devices on my network. I can connect to the device through my wireless NIc card, but that doesnt tell me who or what it is.

it is a weird sid name that has nothing to do with my companies network

SID> pbs_event_technology
MAC> 02:04:23:f6:49:83

Thanks

Get a laptop and go walkabout 'til the signal gets stronger. Or attached a decent directional antenna to your PC card and swing it round for best signal - that at least might give you the direction.

Is it there night and day? Half-hearted attempt by someone trying to glean info from your company? Employee's own laptop accidentally left running? Temporarily change your SSID and get into the rogue machine and leave a "calling card"...

I think the easiest solution would be to use Netstumbler to track how the signal strength increases to find the offending computer ... then strangle the user ;-) j/k.
