Is there any advantage to sending digital files to a print bureau using PDF files as opposed to PS files? Is the file size smaller? Do you need the print bureau’s image setter driver with PDF as you do with PS files? I know the print bureau cannot make any changes to the PS file, can they do so with PDF file? Any info on PDF vs PS would be appreciated.

surly,

I would never recommend sending a .ps file anywhere. A PDF file is a cross-platform, complete file that is ready for pre-press. It contains all information that a printer would need.

A .ps file is not the same, it is merely a set of directions for a printer to assemble all of the parts of the document including fonts and font locations, graphic elements and their location, and layout so that the entire document can be printed into a single piece, whether that is a PDF or a physical print-out. This is rather simplistic explanantion.

If a print bureau needs to edit your pub, then send them the original with all fonts and graphics. Neither a .ps or a PDF can be easily edited, though there are apps available ($5,000 and up) that will edit a PDF.
When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
