I have a web site with information available to read in pdf files which are in the same folder as the web page.

When I click on the hyperlink using my desktop the file is displayed in an Acrobat Reader.

When I click on the same hyperlink using my laptop, a new copy of Internet explorer is opened, the reader is not launched and an icon such as might be displayed if a file is not found is displayed in the top right hand corner.

Both PCs have the same version of Acrobat Reader installed.

If this is happening on my macjhine it may also be happening on others machines.

Any thought would be welcome.

Brendan

Sounds to me like your Security settings on the laptop are set to not allow ActiveX to run. Acrobat Reader will not run if ActiveX is Disallowed. I believe this is a default setting in WinXP IE6

Thanks for that suggestion. I think that you are on the right path but not quite there yet.

I have copied the pdf file to my local directory and if I double-click on it there, it correctly runs Acrobat Reader and displays the file.

If I look at the web site in my Net Work places and double click on the file there, it runs IE6 SP2 which does not run the Reader. Same result if I try to view it in AOL Browser.

Sounds like something set at a higher level than IE, which does allow Active X controls.

Any other ideas very welcome

Brendan

Yes it is your IE security settings, not the Operating System settings.

I had that very same trouble. In the Internet security setting, you probably have "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" Disabled. Enable it.

You might also have to Enable "Run ActiveX controls and Plug-ins"

That fixed my problems.

Thanks Waytech2003,

I had enabled all Active-X options but I still do not get the Reader to display.

Should the system offer to Download the file as it cannot display it?

Thanks

Brendan

All I can suggest at this point would be to go to Adobe.com and download their newest Reader. The installation would fix any Registry problems that you might have.

Good luck
