PDF File Extension Assigned Programatically

I do have a large collection of files without any file extension. Many of them should be PDF files. Do you know of any programatic way in which I can identify these files and then assign the .PDF extension to the ones that are really pdf files?

Do you use mac or PC? No extension seems like old mac stuff. If so, do you know what app you used to create them?

If you are on mac, come back with the OS version you're using. OSX10.3 can make it pretty easy. If you're on pc, sorry, but I cannot help.
