I'm using Access 2003. Yes. I can use Pagemaker to save a form in the PDF format. But I think this is a purely raster image and my client needs a workable vector PDF. Does Access 7 or 10 provide this? I downloaded a trial version of 7 and it exported the PDF I think I need. But I only have the acrobat reader so all PDFs look alike to me.
Any recommendations whether to upgrade to Access 7 or 10? Any bad bugs? 3 seems so much simpler and faster. Maybe I'm used to it.
2003 vs 2007/2010 - yeah, I think it's just that you're used to it.
There are a few issues in converting older databases to thew newer versions, b/c some of the older code sometimes breaks. Microsoft has a whole list of changes that point out what might break. I had to change one small process, myself, due to the 2003 -> 2007 change.
From what I'm hearing, 2010 has a few more features, but in some ways, doesn't seem as nice as 2007 - at least from a visual perspective... don't know if it's any better/worse functionally, b/c didn't take enough time playing with the beta demo of it while I had it installed.
It would do you good to go through some intro type tutorials so you can learn where all the different menu items and such have moved to as well. It can be a pain at first, but once you get used to it (I think, and most people I've talked to agree), the ribbon is really a nice way of doing things.
You can try this after market product called CutePDF
You install it as a printer.
Then, your user can select it and print the report to a PDF file
or
You can, in code, set it as the default printer, pass a file name and then the report will be created and saved as a pdf file.
We use it all the time and it works great with access.
I think CutePDF is the same as pagemaker and only makes a raster (non-searchable) PDF file - its an image w/out text.
One thing missing from Access 7 is the compact/repair database function that used to sit under the tools menue. I use it all the time in 3. Where is it in 7?
What about graphs? That was a disaster in 3. How about 7 any better? Anyone know a good add-on? That is 3rd party-ware that's just asking to happen. I don't think much of microsoft graph either.
Hmm, that's interesting. I wonder if the free version only does raster images... I'll have to give it a go myself, just to see, as I know I have it installed at home.
