%PDF Error opening files sent from Mac

Hi,
PDF files sent by a MAC user are giving the "File does not start with %pdf" error when opening on NT machine. Have received PDF files from other MAC users without any problem and have sent PDF files to this MAC user and he can open them.
I'm guessing they're being compressed at this side, but he's very much a novice - can anyone point him/me in the right direction?

This is a common error message which can have several causes. Most likely is that the files are compressed or encoded. There can also be problems if the file has been emailed to you. Check out
