I continuously have problems with pagemaker 6.5.
Sometimes when I place an eps or tiff file, it won't convert the pagemaker file to a pdf(the format I use to print as I don't have a ps printer). Many times this causes
the program to crash and I lose material that has been
previously saved. Here is an example of an error message I get:
%%[ Error: syntaxerror; OffendingCommand: } ]%%

Stack:
-mark-

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

I lost an entire page of a file when I got this message
I don't have this sort of problem with any other programs.
Illustrator, Photoshop, or any of the macromedia web design
programs. I am using these on a PC.
Thanking you in advance.

My suggestion is to go the Adobe's Forums section on their website. In the Pagemaker forums, there is a FAQ that answers alot of questions related to PDF issues. You really need to have Adobe Distiller to properly and successfully create Pdf files from Pagemaker. I create PDFs from Pagemaker every day with no problems because I use Adobe Distiller with Pagemaker. I'm also using a Windows machine.

ocampo..

Pixelchik's recommendation to read the FAQ on Adobe's Forum is a good one, the FAQs are excellent (I even wrote some of them!).

I would first ask, how many fonts do you have installed? How are you placing the images? How are you creating the PDFs?

Fonts.. never have more than 100 - 150 active fonts, too many fonts can wreak havok while running PM. Bad fonts can cause problems with creating PDFs.

Always use File>Place to bring in graphics.. never copy/paste.

Instead of using Export>PDF do a Print to File, then open Distiller and create your PDF that way.

Hopefully one of these tips may help you. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

thanks for the tips! I will
check out the FAQ page (as I should
have done in the first place) and I have
several fonts that I've downloaded from
free font sites on the web that may be
a problem as well...

Free fonts will wreak havok with PM even though they will work well with other apps. It is best to use only quality fonts from known sources, if you want to eliminate problems.

I use free fonts often, but when working with PM or on a document that is destined for pre-press, I will create the image I want in either Photoshop or CorelDRAW, and then place the image, either TIFF or EPS with fonts converted to curves into PM to eliminate poorly designed fonts.
When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I too have had this problem. What I have found was that it seemed to depend on which program I used to create the eps or tif file. If I use visio for example to create a eps file, pm65 will not convert to pdf. If I use coreldraw it works wonderfully.

Photoshop creates EPS files that are not really EPS, and can also cause problems. For EPS stick with Illustrator or CorelDraw. Personally, I prefer CorelDraw. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
