okeedokey, i had it set as cmyk of course..
ahem..

another potentially embarrassing question - how do i apply a drop shadow to a placed JPEG??

again...ahem
its been a while
sorry :-(

steve

well thats the problem, for some reason i cant apply the filter.
i go to "drop shadow", make sure everything is set properly, and hit apply - nothing happens. i cant even see anything with the preview box checked.
the images are .gifs and a .jpg worked on in photoshop.
ive tried applying the drop shadow with text and it seems to work just fine. it just doesnt want to work with a placed pic.

odd.

Hi Steve 011,

You have to embed your jpeg in the illustrator file.

Menu Window> Links

A pallet comes up, select the files you want to embed, go to the little triangle at the right top of your pallet, choose embed

I would be willing to bet your problem with the dull colors has to do with your color mangement profiles. Check the info on your PDF to see what they are, and what you have set in Illustrator. Another possible effect, is the calibration of your monitor, lighting temperature (should be D50), and surround effects.
