pdf distortion

Hi.
Using Cr8.5 and exporting to PDF, certain fonts appear really garbled. Anyone know why, or if there's anything I can do to fix the problem? Normal text doesn't seem to be effected, but the text in graphs is jerky and sometimes unreadable, and non-black text seems to be affected as well.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
