pdf compression

I have Acrobat 4.0 and I'm trying to transfrom Tiff (not compressed files) 8 bit greyscale at 300 Dpi in Pdf files. Everything is OK but trying every option in Acrobat the best I reach is a compression of about 1/3 600 Mb (tif) versus 200 (pdf) is there anyone whi knows how to obtain a better compression ?
