I have recently introduced a PDC (from a linux suse server) and added some of my Win 2000 workstations to the domain. All my workstations had local administrator accounts to allow them to administer their local pc's. When I join to a domain, the user is given standard access rights. The only way I can get it to provide admin rights is to login as the root user. Is it possible to gain local admin rights again without providing the user with the root user.

Right click on My Computer -> Manage -> Local Users and Groups -> Groups -> Administrator group and then add their login name in there. I would advise you to separate everyone by security groups or work groups and create them on the Linux server. Any one person with administrator rights can change your local admin password and lock you out of the computer. You know how people are.

My local username is already in the admin group. When I become a member of the domain, does the local users get used. I login as root and this user does not have a local account but it still lets me have admin access. I maybe need to tell the domain server to provide admin rights to users but only to allow them to administer their own workstations. Is this possible remembering my domain server is suse linux and not windows based
