Is it possible to add a PDC to an NT network that was set up without one,
without destroying the network first?

Which machine did you log into if you did not have a PDC.
Did you have a peer to peer?
If so then you can add a PDC but the login will change to Login into a Domain instead of a workgroup.
Every computer will need to be changed.
Look at Profiles and Roaming to Ease the transfer.

What do you mean by Destroy?
Are you in Novell too?
You can add a PDC. Be ready for some overtime. After you get the PDC connected to the network, and you have setup your users and any policies you may or may not want. Are you going to allow for "Home" directories. Anyway, an NT machine is easy. Simply 'add' the NT machine to the new domain. Do this in 'Control panel\networks' and "change" from workgroup to domain. (Must have administrative rights). 95/98 machines aren't much more difficult. Remember to open up "Client for Microsoft Networks" and specify the domain name. Otherwise you'll never see the 3 tiered logon screen. 'username, password, domain'. Also, within the "Identification" tab of 'Control Panel\Networks', be sure that "Workgroup" has the name of your domain. Your set. Have fun.

Beware that the machine you will be using as a PDC must have NT server installed from scratch. A server that was installed as "Stand Alone Server" cannot be "promoted" to domain controller status. PDC's and BDC's may be promoted and demoted but to become a domain controller in the first place is an install time option only.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

If they add it as a BDC, and then promote it, it will replicate the users over automatically. Also if the policies are set up correctly, they will replicate over to. You just have to copy them to the Netlogon share from there....
