PDA will not communicate with GPS receiver

I've got an old Cassiopeia E125 PDA and can sync with my PC no probs, however I've recently bought a GPS unit (Haicom 240S - which is supposed to be compatible) and Tomtom 3 software for it. The problem is I cannot get any data from the GPS. Thought this was a Tomtom problem at first but I've performed a hard reset of the device and installed only the Haicom GPSInfo software. This detects the port but is not receving any data. I assume that something else is using the COM1 port but cannot see what.
