Hi,

Can anyone advise me with a problem that I am having with a PCMCIA modem card.

I have used my laptop for the past 2 years without major problems. Although recently my machine would not boot up, it was freezing at the win98 splash screen. The laptop usually makes a beep noise to acknowledge that a PCMCIA card is in the slot. In this case it did not make a noise, I then decided to remove the card. When I removed the PCMCIA card and restarted the laptop, everything seemed fine, except no modem. Even when I inserted the PCMCIA card back into the laptop, it would lock up windows, forcing me to force a reboot.

I then fdisk, and formated my laptop and re-installed win98, I had the same problem. If the card was in the slot, the machine would lock up no matter what I did.

What else could be effecting the PCMCIA card ?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Al.

Try the PCMCIA card in a different machine.

Unfortuantely these cards are easy to damage, and moreover, the PCMCIA connector on the laptop is easily abused from motion of the card.

If the PCMCIA card works in another laptop, try using a different PCMCIA card in the same slot as you used for the modem. Does the laptop still lock?

You need to consider both variables: a damaged card and a damaged connector on the laptop.
