Hi there

It's not the first time I've seen this error in Windows 2000. We have a HP Laserjet 4050 printer, networked. One Windows 2000 machine keeps erroring when ever a print job is submitted. The error is as follows:

PCL XL Error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalStreamHeader
Operator: 0x0
Position: 0

Anyone come across this problem before? We're tried re-installing the drivers.

Any comments or suggestions will be welcome.

Try using a PCL 5 driver instead. The error is essence is that the image is too complex for the printer or is requiring more memory than the printer has.
You could try, for example, removing some of the formatting, shading, bolding, etc.
There was a similar topic on this subject here but I coulnt find it.

The PCLXL stream header includes an indication of the Protocol Class Number and Protocol Class Revision assumed by the sender; the printer will reject the stream (with the above error) if it supports only an earlier version of the protocol.

I would guess that the HP4050 supports Class 2, Revision 0 at the latest.

Is it possible that you are using a driver for a later device, which is assuming 2.1 or 3.0 protocol?

Of course, the printer will also report the above error if the stream header is corrupt in some other way, but I can't think why this this be the case.
