PCL multiple pages printing question

I have a client that uses a dos based program for some of their accounting.

They had a setup where when she wanted to print multiple pages, she clicked on a couple of files on the desktop called, one copy, two copy, or three copy. then printed through the program, and it would print the desired ammount of copies.

I know nothing about PCL at all. But this currently isn't working on a new Windows XP machine.

Any thoughts?

You are not giving us much to go on. Guessing, I’d say the files on the desktop probably send the PCL for number of copies to the printer if it is an older printer in a non multi-user environment. It is also plausible that the files change the data string that is going to be sent to the printer. Are these files text or binary files? If text, can you post the contents of two of the files?

Did the printer model change at the same time as the OS or the way you are printing to the printer? Not all printers work the same. Going on the assumption the files on the desktop are PCL files changing the setting on the printer, with newer printers those settings are lost when the connection to the printer is closed.

I'm going to bet the files contain PCL copy commands, and the printer was changed from parallel to ethernet.

When connected parallel, unterminated jobs sent back to back would appear as one job to the printer, so this method would work.

With ethernet, any job sent to the printer is clearly delineated as a separate job. At the end of a job, the printer environment is reset back to the user (control panel) default.

If the command files were changed to use PJL DEFAULT commands, this would probably work. PJL DEFAULT is like changing the setting on the control panel.
