PCL Level 3 commands to Hp 840c being ignored!!!!

I have looked thru the PCL command sets and the Esc Sequences for setting condensed print and page orientation
seem to be identical ...however, the HP deskjet 840c is
not responding to the commands. The 612c, Lj 1200, and Dj
920 all work great! Can anybody shed some light on this
problem for me ? Thanks in advance. Chx
