during the boot(win2k pro)the pci.sys is missing. i read some stuff online that said to expand (sytax= expand d:\i386\pci.sys_ c:\winnt\system32\driver /y) pci.sys but i get "access denied". even trying to change directory to c:\winnt, i get "access denied". i tried the syntax line "logon" which is supposed to initiate the administrator logon, but nothing happens. does anyone know how to force a new logon or some other way around this. i think there was some kind of virus that killed some sys files or modified them. yes i am a network administrator dealing with people who open viruses --
thanks ahead -

the "in place" upgrade is not an option as the windows installation is not found when search is performed. all the files are there, i can see them in repair console, i just can't get in to any of the directories "Access is Denied". any other suggestions?

'i can see them in repair console' - does this mean you've tried to replace the files from recovery console, and you are getting 'Access is denied' (because that's what I was going to suggest!)

How about mounting the drive as slave in another 2k machine, and copying files over from there?

try putting the jumper for the Hard drive on CS instead of master. If you follow the instructions below, and it still doesn't work. Replace your RAM.

"1. Start the Recovery Console.

2. Select the installation you wish to access.

3. Enter the Administrator password.

4. Enter MAP to determine the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM.

5. Type: Expand <CD-ROM drive:>\i386\pci.sy_ c:\Winnt\System32\drivers /y.
You should receive:

pci.sys
1 file(s) expanded.

6. Type exit to terminate Recovery Console."

Wolluf - i get the "access is denied" in repair console, it won't let me logon as anyone in that mode. i'm going to slave it and pull the files off, but it was a laptop hard drive and i didn't have another laptop with two hard drive bays. thanks for the posts though --

pbxman - thanks for the post
