Hi
I have an HP Vectra VE-i8 Pentium III 700 using XP
I set it up with a Trust 5 Port USB 2 PCI Card, (all device managers setup & running apparently), so I could connect an iPod to it - After several reinstalls of iPod software (because the iPod was not recognised) I tried the old 1.1 USBs and found that they worked OK - However having moved the USB 2 Card to another slot it still did not work
nor did my USB DVD writer when plugged into that card

My BIOS is Award HW 27.10 and under Advanced settings I have the following:
Plug & Play OS - YES
Reset config data - NO
PCI config - PCI Slot #1 - Enabled
PCI Slot #2 - Enabled
PCI Slot #3 - Enabled
Pnp/PCI ISA Resource Exclusion
IRQ-3 assigned to - PCI/ISA/Pnp
(the same settings show for IRQ 4 /5 /7 /9 /10 / 11/ 15)
Init Display First - PCI Slot

Now to the questions:-
1) Could there be a conflict in my BIOS settings that's stopping the PCI Slots being recognised
2) Could there be some other physical reason the slots aren't being seen by the OS (eg dirty contacts, but how to clean them)
3) Anything else anyone can suggest please

NB: The PC appears to function correctly in all aspects except this problem with the USB 2 Card - The iPod was seen intermittently by the OS when plugged into this port, but only for about 20 secs at a time then disappeared / reappeared etc, but was never seen for long enough to register with iTunes [Shadessad]

are there any other pci cards in any other slots? in the past there have been timing problems with some cards, so they have to be moved to the first slot (or the last, forget which) to prevent the bus timing issues.

you can also turn on the "reset config data" option to see if it clears things up.

re: drivers- are you using a native xp driver or one from the manufacturer? you can see if the manu. has an updated driver...

I take it that the ipod you have will work with usb2.0?
Or maybe it will only work with usb1?
I dont know, just asking.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Hi Jimp56, Garebo
Only 1 PCI Card slot in use - Using card manufacturers XP drivers - iPod is intended, (recommended), to work in USB 2 - (USB 1.1 deprecated by Apple because of '...potential overheating...at slower upload speeds...') - Will try "reset config data" today - Thanks guys
