PCI Simple Communications Controller

PC runs Win2K. Wife has an embroidery sewing machine that plugs into the serial port. Device manager shows yellow question mark at VGA controller and PCI Comm. controller. All efforts to install the drivers (Code 28) have failed. The OS was re-installed, no success. Ideas?

Are you saying you can't install the driver for the sewing machine?

What PCI cards do you have installed in the computer?

has it ever worked on win2K? Is the serial port enabled in the BIOS? What is the computer brand and model #? You're just not using the right drivers, or they're not being installed the right way. You shouldn't have a VGA and PCI controller in yellow. The PC should have come with drivers for these components.

No driver for the sewing machine; it simply runs via serial cable. BTW, it worked once before.
PCI cards include: Ethernet, USB 2.0, modem, case fan (although I don't think it uses PCI, just power)

There must be some software to install for the sewing machine. Also, you modem is probably using the same IRQ and COM port as the serial port on the back of the computer. Is the modem working? In my experience, improperly installed modems give the PCI Communications Controller error.

Gave you incorrect information. I am sitting at my PC trying to figure this out. I looked at my PC and gave you the configuration. The proper config should be: ethernet card, PCI video card (SiS). On board video was too weak to do her graphics, no AGP slot (Micron PC).
Just looked at BIOS, did something stupid (evidently loaded optimum BIOS), now no video at all. Duh.

If you can't get into the BIOS you will have to reset it. Your motherboard manual will tell you where the BIOS reset (or clear) jumper is. Power off the system, set the jumper, wait 10-15 seconds, remove the jumper and turn the system back on. This resets it to the factory defaults.
