PCI-E card in PCI-X slots xSeries 235

Has anyone had experience with running a PCI-E video card in a PCI-X slot on an a 235? They are suppose to be compatible but everyone knows how that goes. This is for hosting an application that requires a pci-e video adapater present and trying to determine whether we can utilize some existing hardware that is laying around here.

Apparently they are not compatible so my question is obviously of no value. I was under the impression they were backwards compatible technology.
