I beleive I found my answer here:

And it goes like this:

pcAnywhere provides direct remote control of a computer. It does not
have any built-in remote networking functionality, such as drive
mapping. While there is an area for Remote Networking found in
pcAnywhere, this is actually a unified interface for any Dial-Up
Networking (DUN) icons that were created by it, not by pcAnywhere.

pcAnywhere has the ability to connect over DUN to a Remote Access
Server (RAS). It does not make the connection itself, but relies on
DUN to do so for it. Therefore, any issues you encounter when
connecting over DUN are derived solely from it, not pcAnywhere.

One of the main "issues" encountered when using DUN and pcAnywhere is
the network protocol that is used. pcAnywhere must use NetBIOS as its
protocol if the RAS computer is Windows 95 or Windows 98. Only if the
RAS computer is Windows NT can pcAnywhere use TCP/IP.

If you would like to know more about how pcAnywhere can work over DUN
and RAS, or how to configure and troubleshoot DUN and RAS, I recommend
