I need to upgrade my memory, but I am considering overclocking the bus of my AMD system. I am currently using 256 pc2100 (as specified my mobo) and I would like to upgrade to 512 pc2700. Here are my system specs:

-AMD Athlon XP 2100
-256 ddr pc2100
-Abit kg7 RAID
-Geforce 4 TI 4200
-Antec 400w power

I know the Athlon XP 2100 is nearly impossible to overclock, so I may switch to a 2200 or a 2000. After unlocking the proc, I plan to jack the bus from 133 to about 160 (ddr). Is it OK to use pc2100 memory, or do I have to switch to pc2700? If I stick with pc2100, do I need to put heatsinks on my DIMMs? This abit motherboard has extensive overclocking options, including adjusting the voltage/timing settings for the system memory. Ideally, I don't want to have to adjust that stuff.. only the processor multiplier. Can anyone shed some light?

Well, one quick answer I can give you is that your motherboard won't work with PC2700. It is only compatible with PC1600/PC2100. Also, newer motherboards allow you to overclock the FSB while leaving the Memory bus alone running at its original speed. Therefore, you should be able to overclock with the memory you already have. However, how far you can increase the FSB without damaging the CPU is another story.

This site is meant to target professional/business use of PC's and not so much personal/gaming use. I suggest doing a google.com search for overclocking sites, as there are a ton out there. Just be forewarned that overclocking benefits usually come at the price of shorter life of the CPU and stability...
