Right, got me a very frustrating system problem.

I’ve been running XP SP3 for ages and decided to upgrade to Vista 64 bit to take advantage of DX10 and my 64 bit processor, installed vista a-ok, got my apps and drivers installed, did a few reboots.

Then I installed SP1 via auto updates, I rebooted and my memory stick was left in the USB port, windows decided this needed a check disk run so I left it….2 hours later it was stuck on the same file so I made the fair assumption it’d crashed so I hit the magic button and then turned it back on but it wouldn’t POST, just gave me a black screen and that’s all I’ve been getting ever since
I’ve tried to remedy the problem by doing the following:

Disconnecting everything except PSU, GPU & HDD and only left 1 RAM stick in

Tried single RAM stick in another slot

Tried GPU in different slot

Tried 3 different BIO’s revisions (I have spare chips laying around)

Reset the CMOS (even left the battery out for 10 mins to ensure it was clear)

Help!

Powercolor Radeon 4850 1Gb Edition
Antek 800w PSU

Two things you could try:

1. Place the DVD in the DVDROM and boot with it, and then choose the REPAIR function...

2. Reinstall the OS from scratch... and make sure that you have NO USB devices (except mouse and KBD) attached...

Xyphios:

The computer isn't POSTing at all?

Here's a "Quick check list"

1) Are fans spinning? Power supply fan? CPU Fan?
2) Are drives spinning up?
3) Does the keyboard initialize? All 3 lights should flash once when you power up.
4) Are there any POST beeps?
5) Anything displayed on the screen?
6) If so, can you get into the BIOS?

If the answer to 1 or 2 is "No", then start with the power supply.

If 3 is "Yes", then that's one of the first things that happens in POST, that's a good sign.

If 3 is yes, and 4 is no, then it could be a corrupted bios.

If 4 is yes, but 5 is no, you need to identify the beep pattern, but you may have a bad video card.

Speaking of which... when you were switching stuff around inside, some video cards require additional power from the PS. Did that come loose or get disconnected?

If 6 is yes, try turning off all built-in peripherals; USB, sound card, NIC, etc. and see if you can boot.
