what's UMB? what's happened since it did boot (hardware/software changes, major crashes, virus....)

UMB normally means "Upper Memory Block". This is a part of Reserved Memory in DOS. What that has to do with his boot problem is a mystery to me.

What is the exact error message you are receiving?

You've only given scant clues but you may have a sick (as in unwell, not as in kewl!) memory stick.
Turn on your BIOS memory check and see if it passes. If the memory is not bypassed, check that the memory indicated is what you have installed - with any memory assigned to on-board video taken into account.

Are you running DOS? Windows? What version? During the bootup, press F8 and manually step through each command line, see which command is causing the failure. If it's the UMB command, try commenting out/disabling the command and restart the machine. See if it boots past this point, just be aware that later commands/programs may well fail due to the missing UMB.
