Check the task manager, the person who previously had may have set it up to turn every few months at night to run a disk defrag or something, if thats empty look in the bios, someting may have gone screwy(technical term) and set it to boot up automatically. Either way run virus and spyware scans to make sure its not infected.
Look in the BIOS for any "wake on" settings. Many will wake up on ring if the phone rings, or a USB Event (sometimes called a Type 47 Event); and finally there are some that will wake up on LAN activities.
Disable all of these. Finally, make sure the inside is clean of dust.
