Help!! I have an HP that is apparantly dead. When I switch it on it just sits there at the HP logo, F1 to get into BIOS does nothing, F10 to get into HP recovery does nothing, in fact the keyboard does nothing (no lights) and the machine just sits at the HP logo. I have tried a different keyboard and different RAM but no change.

Is my PC dead? Because I can't even get into BIOS I don't know if its a hardware/software issue. It was working fine and then all of a sudden crashed and now does nothing.

Thanks.

Are you sure the keyboard is plugged into the right port? Is it a PS2 keyboard?

Check your ps2/serial connections on the back. Example if you have mouse serial hooked into keyboard and keyboard in mouse it will freeze like that and not load. Let us know if you have checked this.

It is a PS2 keyboard, and is plugged into the correct port. At first I thought the keyboard was bad so I tried a different keyboard.

Are you getting any beeps?

Open the case and disconnect everything except graphics card & keyboard. Restart and see if anything happens. If not, remove the battery on the motherboard for several minutes. Put it back & try again. If still no good, likely dead motherboard (or possibly dying power supply). If you do get some action, reconnect items one at a time and try again - hopefully finding the culprit, if there was one (if the batter trick makes it work, probably will all be ok).

Thanks again for replies, electronicsfreak[/]I don't get any beeps at all, just silent and the HP logo. wollufI already tried removing all hardware, but still no change (also tried a different PSU). Will go pull the battery now and hope for a good result.

Ok pulled battery and still no life. What's weird is that I get the HP screen come up, but then nothing happens. If it the motherboard was dead then does it not make sense that I would get nothing but a blank screen?

Ok found out something else, if I remove all the RAM from the system then the motherboard beeps at me to tell me there is no memory installed, yet if I try the same RAM (or new RAM) I don't get any beeps and it stays at the HP logo.

This is bugging me, I don't want to shell out on a new board if its RAM, but even with new RAM (same spec) I get nowhere.

From what you just said it is my opinion that your motherboard has kicked the bucket.

Thanks both, looks like I am off to try and find as close a matching motherboard as possible. So far I can find one with everything except the rear firewire, and since I almost never use that feature its not a big deal. I can always add a PCI firewire card if I ever need it.

Thanks again for the help trouble shooting.

I had the same problem with a dell last year I had dell come out and replace the mother board, but it did not help at all...When I would boot it, lights on the keyboard beeped, then it booted up and went to the winxp logo/blue background witht the colored line at the bottom, but it would freeze there for days. Never changing, so I trashed it. I sat with tech support for hours upon hours on the phone, no help...
