PC "beeping" constantly but otherwise works normally

I have a rather peculiar situation that started a few days ago which I have not been able to resolve. "beeps" are constantly being emitted from the speaker in my PC cabinet, the speakers on the desktop are not involved. The PC is running Windows 98 SE and boots normally with no errors. All applications are running normally. No new hardware has been installed for several months. Norton Anti virus does not find any known viruses on the system and all system utilities fail to find anything at all out of the ordinary. This beeping has several different tones but no recognizable pattern, it will last anywhere from a few seconds to several hours then stop for a while and start up again. The time between "beeping fits" has ranged from a few seconds to several days with the most common time being a few hours. All fans are working normally and all connections in the cabinet are secure, the temperature of the CPU and in the case are both normal.

Any suggestions on resolving this would be greatly appreciated, it is about to drive me nutty just having to hear it!

You could use Crtl-Alt-Del to get rid of all the programs except Explorer, and if that works, close each program seprately to find out which one is beeping. If that doesn't work, you could always unplug the PC speaker inside the case 10010101110101111100010101101

I would be looking for a hardware problem, the motherboard error beep codes should be listed either in the manual or on the manufacturer's web site. It sounds like an alert for either temperature, voltage or fan speed. If there are no actual problems it may be a false alert due to a motherboard fault.

Could be caused by hardware monitoring program. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I dont like your post, ceh4702. I feel that you are bieng discrimanaory against certain religions and races by the comment "...hardware monitoring problem" This quote openly attacks Afro-Russian people of Jewish and Hare-Krishna descent. 10010101110101111100010101101

Change you power supply :) You beeping will stop after that :)

Definately sounds like a problem with your motherboard. Unless it is a really old crappy DOS game, most programs you would run won't actually use the PC Speaker at all, so it sounds most like an alert generated by the motherboards hardware monitoring processes. Have you checked your CPU temperature after the machine has been running for a while (either through the BIOS or with some hardware monitoring prog from Windows, and see how hot it is running) while everything APPEARS to be operating normally, your CPU may be running over-hot. If it is an Athlon chip it may also be triggering an alarm through normal operation, as they run extremely hot...
