Not sure if this is faulty hardware, faulty software or virus activity.

When shut down the pc goes through the normal stuff and turns itself off, then later on it turns on all by itself, but only when connected to the phone line. Also if left logged into windows PC will attempt to connect to the internet, but stops at the password/dial window.

Running XP Pro SP2.

Have norton antivirus and latest defs, but didn't find anything.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Did you try what badbigben suggested?

your log is clean apart from a few dead entries! Did you run ewido and the online scans, did they find anything?

go to add/remove and uninstall RXToolBar, delete its folder from C:\progrram files.

have hijack this fix these entries. close all browsers and programmes before clicking FIX.

This can be due to 'Wake on Ring' being set in your BIOS, the computer will 'power up' every time you get a call.
Press Del during boot up to get into the BIOS settings.
It might not be called 'Wake on ring', but will be alonside the 'Wake on LAN' setting.
But be careful not to change anything else.

Steve: Delphi a feersum engin indeed.

Anybody know what these arein the above log? They look suspicious to me.

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Delete on Reboot. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that hasthe red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file on next reboot. Click Yes. It will then ask if you want to reboot now. Click No. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box. Then click yes to reboot after you entered the last one.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

Well I tried the bios setting first, I disabled it and it enabled itself, so I disabled it again and checked it was disabled during the boot up straight after changing the setting and all was well until the next time I booted up - wake on ring in the bios was enabled again.

So I went ahead and did all of the other stuff above to do with Ewido and Cleanup now the pc hasn't done it again for 2 days.

So I guess it was a virus setting the wake on ring in bios to enabled.

Thanks all.

Glad to hear that you got it sorted...
