I am having a problem with my PC recovering from sleep. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic Service Pack 2 with an Intel mother board dx48bt2. The PC is a recent build in the last 12 months. I initially installed Windows Vista home edition with valid license and the computer would properly sleep. To recover from sleep all I had to do was move mouse or touch a key.
About 2 months ago the PC stopped recovering from sleep properly and I didn't make any operating system or bios changes. The only thing loaded that could have changed anything was windows vista updates and reboots.
The only way to get the PC back on is to pull the plug out of the power supply and then power back on and change the auto sleep settings. When the PC goes into sleep and won’t recover the only thing to do hit the power button and it will boot back on and a quick DOS like window will flash and say No Hard Disc Detected and then go a screen where you can enter BIOS or wait and the get DOS like window “Do you want to start windows normally.” This is what I do then turn sleep off in control panel but I would like to get sleep to work properly. I have an acrylic case with multiple lights. I have looked at all the BIOS and the Operating System control panel power options but I am not able to resolve the issue. I don't think this is hardware because I haven’t changed any hardware. Any ideas for troubleshooting this would be great. Here are my BIOS Settings for Power Options
BIOS - System Setup – Power
After Power Failure <stay Off>
Wake from LAN from S5 <Power On>
ACPI suspend State <S3 State>
c2 state <enabled>
Wake System from S5

I wonder if one of the updates changed your hibernation settings, or if possibly the hibernation files got corrupted.

I would try:
1. Disable hibernation - under power options.
2. Restart the PC
3. Re-enable hibernation
4. Let the thing take a nap. [wink]
5. See if issue resolved.

Disabling the hibernation, and rebooting will help clear out the hibernation file(s), and force Windows to rebuild them before the next time it hibernates. So if this is the problem, it'll be fixed.

Otherwise, if you had hibernation disabled, check to be sure it's still disabled. I'm pretty sure I've seen Windows Updates actually enable/disable hibernation amongst other things. I've had services disabled (my personal preference), and Windows Update re-enabled those services.

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista

Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting.

Have you tried setting the Bios to the safe default settings?

The hard drive manufacturer will have free bootable diagnostic software that will thoroughly check the condition of your hard drive.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.
