Im replacing my hard drives anyway but was just curious if anyone has heard of this and what may be causing it.

I can reproduce it every single time.

When i scroll the mouse wheel ....... I hear a beep from my PC and in 30 seconds it locks up and i have to do a hard shut down and restart.

What OS are you running? W2K and XP have an event viewer hidden away in admin tools, that might give you a clue as to what it's objecting to.
All the best

Im running XP Pro and actually looked there.

It says my HD has a bad block ........ thats why im replacing it with two 120 gigs and setting up a mirrored raid.

Is there any fix's for a bad bock?

Just not sure if this drive is usable now or not.

Depends on the cause of the bad block. A re-format will hide the bad block so it won't cause any problems. If it was just a failure of the head reading the disc, no problem. If it was caused by the hard drive being physically "banged" (computer fell over), no problem. If the material is flaking off the disc, problem! You could reformat it, and run chkdsk (full), and let it mark the bad blocks. Use it for a secondary drive for a while (nothing important), and check with chkdsk occasionaly. You'll probabably find more bad blocks. If so - doorstop!

OK ... ive done my upgrade with two 120 gig ata ultra 100 HD's with a mirrored raid setup and have installed the os (xp pro) and started adding all the other drivers needed ............ and sure enough ...... when i scroll my mouse wheel ... it still locks up my system!

Any ideas on this?

Power supply?

the mouse itself?

something not configured correctly?

bios setting?

By the way ..... im not sure i have my raid setup quite right either but thats in another topic.

Is this a Logitech mouse? I don't know how many I've had to remove the Logitech drivers because they conflict with the XP native drivers. Sometimes I have to go to Safe mode to remove the Logitech &%&, because XP locks up in normal mode. Anyway, remove the drivers that come with your mouse. You'll lose any special mouse functions, but see if it solves your problems. You can start trouble-shooting from there.

No its a Microsoft Inteli-mouse optical usb........but i have a PS/2 adapter on it and have it plugged into the PS/2 port.

I'll try some other mouses and check on the drivers.

Thanx

Well i hooked the mouse up by USB instead of the ps2 adapter and it seems to have taken care of the scrolling crashes ........ but the system is still unstable and stutters and locks up and beeps and clicks right before hand.

Ive been talking about that problem in another thread about a raid setup ....... so i guess we can let this one die out now.

I have two hard disks 40Gb and 10GB
in 40GB HDD i installed winxp now i want install win98 in 10GB Harddisk and mount in such way when we start computer it give me a option to start with 40GB HDD OR 10GB HDD.
If any kind of setting for this pls tell me

my mail id is dipak_41@rediffmail.com

Why would you post that in this thread and not start your own?

But as to your question ........ Ive had 2 OS's on 2 different partitions before and could boot from either one so im sure it would be the same with doing it with 2 hard drives.

If im wrong ..... im sure one of the more knowledgable people here will let you know.

How old is that mouse of yours? I had a mouse that was slowly dying recently which was causing my Win98 all sorts of trouble until it had to be replaced, upon which time it suddenly was OK. Go figure!

I guess its about a year old and right now im using and old mouse i had laying around .......... but im still running with the processor underclocked and running stable at the moment.
