Just installed a VisionTek ATI Radeon 9600XT video card with the latest drivers downloaded from VisionTek. My PC is MSI MB with AMD Athelon XP 2200+ CPU. Since I installed the video card, the PC sometimes locks up, blacks out (then returns) and occasionally does a total crash and restart. ???????

Check that the previous video card's software was uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs, and the card was removed from Device Manager.

Next, try different drivers from the CD that came with the card, and from ATI.

If no luck, then reseat the card making sure that it's fully seated. Sometimes a healthy push is needed to do this.

If that's ok, then make sure its cooling fan is running, and its heatsink is securely mounted and correctly positioned so there are no air gaps between the bottom of the heatsink and the card's chipset.

If ok, then remove the computer's cover, and run an external fan blowing on the video card.
If that works, then your system needs more cooling fans.

If an external fan does not help, then see if the card works on another system.
If the same problem happens on another system, then the card may be defective.

If it works ok on another system, then the power supply on your system may be getting overloaded due the higher power demand from the video card.
What is your power supply's watt capacity, and how many drives, PCI cards, external USB and/or firewire devices, and fans are installed on your system?

Thanks for all the tips.

I tried three different drivers, the one on the CD, another from the VisionTek web site and one from ATI's web site.

I already have two extra fans installed in my box.

I returned the video card and replaced my old card - everything is fine now.

Glad to hear that things are running ok, and thanks for posting the solution.

Hardly the fix we were hoping for lol.
And so you now have your (inferior performing?) older card back in.
Try a Geforce FX 5700ultra or 5900XT, far fewer issues with Nvidia cards in my experience.

I must agree with paparazi - Geforce cards have always given me much success with minimal, if any, problems. I have yet to have any real issue with one.

All great accomplishments were once considered impossible.

What OS were you using? On Win88/ME the drivers are weak. On Win 2K they work great! I use an AIW9600XT on a dual-boot system with these above OSes.
