PC hang on MDE creation

I have built a very basic DB (4 tables only) and a few forms and queries. Everything works OK it seems. After Compact & Repair it is 1.7MB only. When I try to make an MDE file, I get as far as selecting a destination filename, then the program hangs on a grey screen with "Make MDE/ADE" on the bottom. I have left it for about 20 minutes but nothing's happening. How long should this take? I would have though it would be quick?

Are there any tests I need to perform to check all is well beforehand?

Make sure that the application compiles without any errors before creating your mde.

Did you compile the code?
When you are at the VBE editor

Debug > Compile <yourdbname>
