Has anyone found a good alternative to connect to IP Office DTE port via pc comm port? Im looking to change my laptop but very hard to get a new one with comm port. I know they have USB to comm port converters but I've heard they are not very good

The USB converter is the only option really, but they work fine with IP Office anyway, they can be an issue with other kit (like Kirk DECT systems) but I have not seen an issue with IP Office :)

I use an £8 USB to Serial cable that I bought from Amazon.

I use one too and it works fine.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

USB serial is fine for IPO

the reason they tend not to get recommended by some engineers is that they are not always recognised by the admin programms for other systems, especially those that are old dos biassed programs because they are looking physical hardware locations.

Computers are like Air conditioners:-
Both stop working when you open Windows

Don't ever try to upload firmware to any device using one though (unless you have an expensive one like £45-£60)

The cheaper one lack flow control but this isn't an issue with IPO

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

matt, the upgrade is not done by the serial cable but by lan.
It will only send the command, nothing else.
I have done this a couple of yet already.
OR do you mean that the command is not send well?

What kind of ignorant moneky do you think I am (it is true, that I may have problems with Dutch ISDN, but that is a different thing [smile])

I've had to DTE IPO devices in the past and a cheap USB serial device is fine! As you have pointed out, the firmware is transmitted by IP.

However, there are plenty of devices that are upgraded by serial, where the firmware is transmitted over RS2232. For this type of device a cheap USB serial device will cause failures when transmitting firmware files, because they don't incorporate flow control. The more expensive USB serial adapters do.

It is about knowing your tools and target devices and their capabilities and limitations

It took you a long time before you responded on this :)
I know you are not stupid :) although i forgot about the dutch ISDN.
Can you help me remember it?

Indeed, this is a problem when you really need an RS232 port then those USB converters are crap.

Problems with dutch isdn was problem trying to get a upc isdn 30 to sync to an IPO. Should just work, but simply didn't. I suspect that the problem was that the card was an old alchemy one but I neither know nor care now!
