My office is in the process of doing a large expansion, and there will be a new comms room for the new section. The big thing is, we really don't want to run 10 individual cables to from the comms room to the original comms closet where the PBX is located. Can we reduce the number of cables needed by using a 24 strand cable instead of 6 4-stand? Can this work, or will crosstalk be an issue?

Sure you can use 25 50 or even 100 pair as an IDF to connect everything it is done all the time espically in a large environment. Cross talk will not be an issue

I always run twice the backbone cable that I need and split the pairs between 2 cables. For example: Lets say I have 100 phones hanging off an IDF. Then I run 2 100 pair cables.

Yes,you can use the 24 pair (not strand,as strand is a term we use for fiber).
If your pbx requires one pair per connection, think of doubling that for future expansions now, as the cable will already be in place,,,,,so run a 50 pair to the new area.

Good Luck,

Has been in the cabling business for about twenty years and is now the Sr PM for a cabling company located in the Los Angeles area.
Also a General Class Amatuer Radio Operator.

Above comments are all sound. The cabling manufacturers take special care in developing their multi-cables with custom twists to prevent crosstalk. This is a significant engineering process that they have refined into low-cost high-productivity products.

Also make sure to follow plenum-vs-PVC cable rules when running from MDF to IDF.
