Hi all,

I use my desktop a lot to temporarilly store files. I always have, so I notice when something changes.

Just yesterday, I started having a 4 or 5 second 'pause' before the menu appears when clicking on files on the desktop!

Until yesterday, this was, as I would expect it to be.. Instant!

Any ideas folks? This is a new one on me, but VERY annoying.

Thanks

Kutt

If the ShellExView tool can't help you, you can try System Restore, or a Safe Mode test, and then Clean Boot test. You can also try testing with another user in case it is a Profile problem.

ShellExView v1.41 - Shell Extensions Manager

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista (or 7, or 8).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking/ Check. It will immediately tell you if there are problems with your drive. If it says there are errors then run the scan and let chkdsk fix them.

Thanks for the link, Goom. I've often wondered about that myself.

Yeah thanks for the help folks..

I did actually suspect that it was something to do with those handlers.. I have a suspect that is the newly installed JustCloud (backup) tool....

However I run the Shell ExView, and that particular handler is not in the list. At all!

The problem with this is that I have started to use the Just Cloud backup because we use it for my wifes business.. So it's paid for and we won't use anything else.

So my question becomes...

How can I get rid of that handler, and keep the software?

Thanks as always folks,

Kutt

If it is not there at first glance then perhaps it is there but under some other name?

What about the Clean Boot procedure can that help you identify some cause?

You seem to have 5 seconds to check with Task Manager too. Maybe that can help you. Using Task Manager, have a look at the Process Tab and see which program is using all the CPU. That will be the program that is slowing your machine down and causing you to lose time.

This is a brilliant idea, and I will certainly find use for that little tidbit in the future!! :)

It seems the culprit is wmiprvse.exe, which is part of the windows system I found out after a bit of research. Problem is, I don't know what to do about it. I have read lots of posts where it's high cpu usage can cause problems, but the 'fix' from microsoft say's 'There is not enough free space to install this' (when I have over 400GB on 2 seperate drives, and 128GB on my Windows drive!) Typical Microsoft fix!

Any further suggestions folks?

Thanks in advance,

Kutt

Does the fix (if it applies to Windows 7) run any better if you right-click on the actual Fix??.exe and selecting the "Run As Administrator" option? Do so even if your user is an Admin.

Maybe something like this run from an Elevated Command prompt might fix up wmiprvs, click Enter after each command.

Try Winmgmt/? for information. Then run each of these hitting enter after each:

winmgmt/clearadap
winmgmt/kill
winmgmt/unregserver
winmgmt/regserver
winmgmt/resyncperf
