Pattern Fill question

Somone told me not to use pattern fills as they cause problems when printing, as the fill contains no actual path information.

Sounds like that would make sense, but I'd like a second opinion on the matter.

Also, if anyone knows a way of succesfully utilising pattern swatches in there print work, could you please share your technique. I tried doing an "expand appearance" but the paths did not appear.
