I need to get artwork into Quark. You know, a logo type thing without a white background so it can be placed over coloured backgrounds. I've had a friend trace a logo for me but it has jaggy edges. Is there a good way to learn the correct protocols to do this (quickly) Any suggestions welcomed!

From the title of your post and this comment, it sounds as though you created a logo in Photoshop, and now want a vector version?

First - bad idea to create a logo in PS as you have probably found, as it is not possible to rescale to different sizes (esp bigger) without becoming pixelated.

So you have two choices: start again in Ilustrator OR open the PS file in Illustrator and use the PEN TOOL to trace the outlines. The Pen Tool is tricky to master initially, but it is the only tool that will give you the clean sharp edges (i.e. NOT jaggy) that you need. What tool did your friend use to 'trace the logo'? Here's a good tutorial for using the Pen Tool (in Photoshop) but the principles are very similar in AI). - you could try the technique in PS itself and then bring the paths you have created into AI.

Once you have the logo in vector format, then save it as an EPS to bring into Quark.
