I have a simple enough question:

I have a text layer, above that I have a shape. I wish to cut out the shape so all that it left of the shape is the text, like a mask.

I thought the pathfinder tool would achieve this but its not working out for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Create outlines of your text. I would put a copy of the text onto another layer and hide that layer first though. So if you need to change the text you can.
