How do I create a shape layer from a path?

Select the path, then in the Layers palette, create a new adjustment layer, such as Solid Color or Gradient.

I'm assuming you already have a path ??
Make a new layer. Click on the path in the path palette to highlight it. Click on the solid circle at the bottom of the path palette to fill the shape with foreground colour. You now have a shape on a layer.

blueark: Thanks! That is exactly what I want to do.

rickwells: That would fill the path on the current layer, a shape layer is a different type of layer.
