path color?

I am referring to the path indicator line (color) on the screen. I think the colors are showing nodes versus control points, while I am drawing. I wasn't aware I had any control over those while drawing a clipping path. I have tried to research this but I must be explaining this wrong because I have had no replies and can not find anything on the web...
